And I now present... WOM.bat
Hello all! My plan for Tim has been mod-approved, and I've been asked to put up an OOC info post so that others can easily make use of the new website he's built. I've lovingly stolen the app code to make it pretty, because I'm terrible at designing things. Please read it through and and hit me up with any questions.
What is WOM.bat?
What is WOM.bat?
- WOM.bat is a brand-new, Starfallen-friendly social media site that goes live June 2nd.
- It's a secure message board website on the .bat domain which hosts no other websites.
- There will be no IC indications that Tim Drake is the creator of it, unless he informs your character directly.
- Minimal moderation, but there's a system in place to remove text if anyone starts trolling spamming slurs.
What do WOM.bat posts look like?
- WOM.bat is nearly entirely text-based website. Envision something like this.
- There’s a number of boards set up for Starfallen, meta, and guild topics, including one to suggest more boards. Current boards are:
- Alliance Intel
- Society Secrets
- Fantastic Sucks
- Sky School - Rat Your Professors
- Battlements of the Shining Gods
- Government Griping
- Know Your Rights
- Conspiracies (Godfall, Featherweight, etc)
- Characters will be able to create posts in the boards and reply to them.
- Attempts to post a link or image will result it the raw URL showing in the post. ASCII art works though.
- Screenshots will not work on your phone.
- No other apps will be allowed to run on your computer while accessing it via the lockdown browser.
- DMs are possible, but will delete after 24 hours. No indication is given if the message was received, read, or if the other person is typing.
- Copy, cut, and paste will not work on the site. If you want the URL someone posted, you'll have to physically write it down.
- It does have a very good search function, so characters will be able to find posts with keywords.
- All posts will delete permanently after a maximum of 7 days. Characters may select an earlier delete deadline and can mark it as such if they choose.
- Have a Suggested information text area:
How can my character access it?
- If your character has a jailbroken phone, they can download the app from a different secure server for 72 hours after Tim's cryptic anon post goes up if they go past first page of search results for the words of his post.
- On the world equivalent Linux or Mac desktop, it's accessible through a lockdown browser. No Windows support at this time. [Will be edited if anyone offers to change that).
- After 72 hours, the download file disappears. Characters will have to hear about it through Word of Mouth (WOM) and get it from other characters.
- Accounts don't save user registration info. When you set your secure tripcode (like a 16+ bit password), a random username in the format user(characterstring) is assigned to you. Ex: user34634sdrweI4324&!rf
- If you lose your tripcode, you're never posting under that random username again and have to get a new one.
Can my character help with WOM.bat?
- If your character knows Tim and is tech-savvy, let me know in the comments if you want to work out their participation in this. Hand-waving or backdating threads to last week is fine for the bare bones architecture; we can future date any additional features they'd offer to assist with.
- Taking volunteers for Windows equivalent program (he's written it of as a wretched hive of scum and villainy), securing new locations for the physical servers, funding, etc.
For the techies - is it secure?
- It's as secure as anything online can be and uses end-to-end encryption.
- It's unindexed by search engines and unarchivable by web archives.
- Good luck finding the servers.
- There are multiple levels of LLCs and other BS between the site and the servers and the owner.
- You'd have to be a tech-based super-something to get anywhere at all with hacking it. If your character is going to try, hit me up for a discussion. If they poke at the search function and security features, they will find it to be much more robust and well-coded then the simple format appears.
